Tea Harvest Dance“There are some similarities to the chamber groups of Western Europe, except that most chamber groups we have heard have neither the spontaneity or breadth of musical vision that this ensemble demonstrates. They embrace the popular and the classical traditions of China, old songs and new, music from the north and music from the south into a repertoire that spans thousands of miles and thousands of years.”

“The accomplished musicians of the Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble also performed western music on their classical Chinese instruments. The Skylark, a wild and uninhibited Romanian dance, was one of the most effective pieces, in a torrid performance of considerable virtuosity. Music for RCMP, an original composition by Huang, was another. This synthesis of his memories of the RCMP’s musical ride featured Huang on erhu playing music you’d never have thought possible on a one-string fiddle. It incorporated a number of well-known Canadian tunes from O Canadato The Maple Leaf Forever, included the clopping of horses’ hooves, and concluded with wild whinnying on the erhu which brought the audience to its feet.”

“Superb, joyful and evocative.”
