Canada’s first Chinese music ensemble and some of Vancouver’s finest jazz musicians come together for another unique and joyful concert! Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble (VCME) joins banjo player/vocalist Arnt Arntzen, bassist Jennifer Hodge and drummer Nicholas James to present Jasmine Jazz 2 at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden on Sunday, April 24.

Arnt Arntzen looks forward to his second collaboration with the VCME : “I am very excited to work with the Chinese Music Ensemble again, and in particular with Jirong Huang. Jirong has so much fun when he plays, and I can’t wait for him to meet Jennifer Hodge and Nicholas James, who have a similar attitude to music. I look forward to a robust collaboration with this group of people as we adapt Chinese folk songs and Jazz songs to our respective instruments. The jazz repertoire will be by Canadian composers, and to me there is nothing more Canadian than acceptance and celebration of the culture that people bring here from other lands. Having Canadian songs played on Chinese instruments seems like a perfect fit to me.”

The unusual interplay between traditional Chinese and jazz instruments makes Jasmine Jazz a unique musical experience. Jazz will be interpreted through traditional Chinese instruments; and traditional and contemporary Chinese music will be given a new life through jazz. In addition to new arrangements of Chinese traditional songs, the musicians will perform music by legendary names from Canadian jazz such as Oscar Peterson, Tiny Parham, and Ernest Seitz/Gene Lockhart.

The presenters gratefully acknowledge the support of Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Vancouver through Cultural Services and the Province of BC through Community Gaming Grants.
